"The importance of the extracellular matrix in health and disease"

Abstract:
Each cell in the body secretes a unique composition of extracellular matrix depending on its location and function. The extracellular matrix provides surrounding cells with support and cues for proliferation, migration and differentiation. In disease states with an inflammatory component, cells alter their extracellular matrix composition which can exacerbate disease or facilitate inflammatory cell invasion. In this presentation I would like to highlight some of the major research findings I have made on the extracellular matrix whilst studying cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, asthma and more recently human adult andembryonic stem cells. She will also present how understanding the extracellular matrix in the brain may facilitate the development of a physiological blood-brain barrier in vitro.
