Our international status is evidenced by the fact that two of three Japanese council members of the World Council of Biomechanics are from the Department of Bioengineering and Robotics, Prof. M. Sato and Prof. T. Yamaguchi, who are also past and present leaders of the COE programs. During the 5 year period of the preceding 21st Century COE program, the members and students of the program published 913 reviewed papers (630 in English) in prestigious journals, including Science and Circulation Research. The members also contributed and/or published 120 scientific books, and were awarded a total of 36 prizes at various international events. During that time, the total amount of research grants awarded to the members was 3.5 billion yen (US$30 million).
