"Recent Advances in Photonics and Electronics for Neural Prosthesis"

Abstract: Nano-Bioelectronics and Systems Research Center (NBS-ERC) is characterized by its intense interdisciplinary researches studying merged technologies of BT-IT-NT. The main research goal is to contribute to mankind welfare by applying nano/micro-scale technology to bioengineering, and to create next-generation industries by developing neural chip, cell chip, and protein chip. This talk will be focused on our work particularly in neural prosthesis. As engineering applications, we have developed neuroprosthetic devices for various neural modalities: hearing, vision and deep brain circuit. Our cochlear implant device for artificial hearing has been tested in pre-clinic level. Other applications such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), artificial retina and electrical stimulator in dental implants are currently being verified through animal study. In addition, fundamental researches for neural prosthesis are also in progress. These topics include electrical stimulation-induced cell clustering and new optical methods of neural recording.

Keywords: Neural Prosthesis, Cochlear Implant, Deep Brain Stimulation, Artificial Retina, Dental Implant, Neuronal Clustering, Optical Neural Recording
